Liz Truss Resigns as Prime Minister
After Just 45 Days in Office
Emergency Contest to Find Successor Announced
Liz Truss has resigned as prime minister of the United Kingdom, after just 45 days in office. The announcement came outside Downing Street on Thursday, October 20, 2022.
Truss's resignation follows a week of political turmoil, which saw the resignation of Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng and the subsequent reversal of a number of Truss's economic policies.
In her resignation statement, Truss said that she had "failed to deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party." She also said that she would remain as prime minister until a successor is chosen.
An emergency contest to find Truss's successor will now take place. The new leader is expected to be announced within a week.
