EU Parliament Approves End of Internal Combustion Engine
CO2 Regulations Impact the Future of Transportation
Motorcycles, Scooters, and Mopeds Exempted
The European Union (EU) Parliament has voted overwhelmingly in favor of phasing out the sale of new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2035. This landmark decision is part of the EU's broader commitment to decarbonization and achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
The new CO2 regulations adopted by EU energy ministers set ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. These targets cannot be met with current ICE technology, hence the decision to transition to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs).
However, it's important to note that the ban on ICE vehicles does not apply to all types of motorized vehicles. Motorcycles, scooters, and mopeds are currently exempt from the regulations due to their relatively low emissions and the challenges associated with electrifying these vehicles.
The transition to ZEVs is expected to have significant implications for the automotive industry and society as a whole. It will drive innovation, create new jobs, and reduce air pollution. However, it will also require significant investment in charging infrastructure and support for consumers making the switch to electric vehicles.
The EU's decision to phase out ICE vehicles is a bold and necessary step towards a more sustainable future. As technology continues to evolve, it is likely that exemptions for certain types of vehicles, such as motorcycles and mopeds, will be revisited in the future.
