Canada's Zhao bounced by Shnaider in Korea Open women's singles
Qualifier Shnaider upsets seventh seed Zhao to reach Korea Open quarter-finals
Canada's Rebecca Marino also reaches last eight, while top seed Emma Raducanu withdraws with injury
Qualifier Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany caused a major upset at the Korea Open on Tuesday as she knocked seventh seed Rebecca Marino of Canada out of the women's singles in the second round.
Friedsam, ranked 123rd in the world, needed just 68 minutes to dispatch Marino 6-2, 6-3 and reach the quarter-finals of the WTA 125 tournament in Seoul.
It was a disappointing end to the tournament for Marino, who was the highest-ranked Canadian in the draw and had received a first-round bye.
Another Canadian, Carol Zhao, also fell in the second round on Tuesday, losing 6-3, 6-2 to Daria Shnaider of Russia.
Shnaider, ranked 118th in the world, saved six of the seven break points she faced and converted five of her own to advance to the quarter-finals.
The top seed, Emma Raducanu of Great Britain, withdrew from the tournament before her second-round match with Daria Snigur of Ukraine due to a left glute injury.
Raducanu, who won the US Open in 2021, had received a first-round bye and was scheduled to play Snigur on Tuesday afternoon.
Her withdrawal means that Snigur will receive a walkover into the quarter-finals, where she will face either Friedsam or Marino.
Other winners on Tuesday included Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland, Anastasia Gasanova of Russia, and Linda Fruhvirtova of the Czech Republic.
The Korea Open is a WTA 125 tournament, which means that it is one level below the WTA Tour.
The tournament is being held in Seoul from September 19-25.
