Manchester City Top WSL After Derby Win
Jess Inspires Victory
Manchester City returned to the top of the Women's Super League (WSL) with a comfortable 3-1 derby victory against Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Goals from Jess, Lauren Hemp, and Khadija Shaw secured the win for City, who moved two points clear of Arsenal at the summit of the table. United, meanwhile, remain in eighth place, six points off the Champions League qualification places.
Jess was the standout performer for City, scoring a stunning opener and setting up Hemp for the second goal. The England international was a constant threat to the United defense and fully deserved her player of the match award.
City dominated the game from start to finish and could have won by an even bigger margin. Hemp hit the post in the first half, while Shaw missed a glorious chance to make it 4-0 in the second half.
United never gave up and pulled a goal back through Alessia Russo in the second half. However, City always looked in control of the game and ultimately deserved their victory.
The win was City's fourth in a row in the WSL and extends their unbeaten run to six games. They will be looking to continue their good form when they travel to Birmingham City in their next match on March 27.
United, meanwhile, will be hoping to bounce back from their derby defeat when they host Aston Villa in their next match on March 20.
